Lord Howe Island Legal Conference
7-14 April 2018
From 7 to 14 April 2018 Learned Friends Professional Education held a legal conference on Lord Howe Island. The conference attendees were blessed with some of the best weather Lord Howe Island can provide. The conference program was designed to ensure that there was a good amount of high quality academic content set out in such a way to ensure that those attending could also make the most of their time on Lord Howe Island.
Amongst the organised events were conference registration and welcome drinks at the Anchorage, a conference dinner at Beachcomber, a North Bay trip and Ned’s Beach lunch.
On their own accounts the attendees engaged in a wide variety of other activities including fishing, golf, diving, climbing Mt Gower, snorkelling and there was even a very successful and memorable game of lawn bowls.
We all appreciated the hospitality of the Island. The public hall was used for conference sessions and provided a charming and quite adequate venue. The delegates were particularly impressed with the state of the Island’s facilities.
Amongst the speakers at the conference were (from the Board) Manager – Environment and Community Services James Lonergan (Jeeves) who addressed the group on the operation of the Lord Howe Island Act, a subject which lawyers always find to be of great interest. Sally Gudge also addressed our group on environmental issues affecting Lord Howe Island which was truly a first class presentation that our delegates and other attendees found informative and fascinating.
Learned Friends is planning another Conference on the Island in April 2020.
