Lord Howe Island 2016

Lord Howe Island Legal Conference

Lord Howe Island Legal Conference

2-9 April 2016

In April 2016 we again returned to Lord Howe Island.  The Conference was our fourth on Lord Howe Island and also marked our five year anniversary since the establishment of Learned Friends in 2011.

Our delegates, presenters and their families enjoyed a week of snorkelling, walking, cycling and socialising.  Without doubt the weather during our week on the island was the best that we have ever experienced providing a fabulous opportunity for attendees to enjoy the island when not conferencing.

Speakers included Louise Byrne, John Wallace, Penelope Watson, Grahame Berecry and Andrew Combe.  As usual the presentations were exceptional covering a wide variety of topics from practical mediation to parentage tests and their admissibility in family law proceedings.

In addition to the legal presentations we also enjoyed an informative presentation from Penny Holloway, the CEO of Lord Howe Island on the Lord Howe Island Act and a presentation from Dean Hiscox, a member of the Lord Howe Island Marine Park Advisory Committee, on the islands world heritage values.

On the social side we visited North Bay, had a BBQ at Neds Beach and enjoyed a traditional Lord Howe Island feast at Beachcomber Lodge for our Conference Dinner.

We also experienced our first Conference wedding with two of our delegates taking the opportunity to get married whilst on the island.  It was a wonderful afternoon with picture perfect Lord Howe Island weather.  I am sure all those who attended will not forget this amazing wedding anytime soon.

Our sincere thanks go to our wonderful speakers, and to all of the participants who made our fourth Lord Howe Island conference such a stunning success.

Papers from our Lord Howe Island Conference are available on this website in Conference Papers.
