Iceland Legal Conference 2018

Iceland Legal Conference 2018

3-10 September 2018

In September 2018 we travelled to Iceland. The country has much to offer and our delegates made the most of it!! The Conference commenced in Reykjavik and concluded in Akureyki. Our delegates, presenters and their families enjoyed a week of sightseeing including a visit to Blue Lagoon, the Godafoss Waterfall and Hump Back whale watching. The weather was wonderful.

As always the highlight of the conference was hearing from local presenters including Professor Heimir Herbertsson from the Reykjavik University and Lilja Nott Porarinsdottir, writer and performer.

Our Australian presenters were also first class and included Judge Paul Lakatos SC, Judge Robyn Tupman, Judge Rolf Driver, Judge Kevin Lapthorn, Peter Cummings SC, Andrew Stone SC and Dr Anne Purcell. The presentation by Judge Lakatos SC on Judicial Interventions certainly provided some food for thought and Dr Anne Purcell and Judge Kevin Lapthorn provided a working insight into “Difficult Clients”.

On a more social note the walking tour of Reykjavik which concluded with lunch at a gastropub was fantastic and provided a great overview of the city and Iceland as a whole. The full day tour which included a visit to the Blue Lagoon was a trip that our delegates will probably never forget and was a great way for delegates, presenters and their families to get to know one another – the photos are amazing. Finally the Hump Back whale tour was a success with a number of whale sightings.

Outside of the Conference Program many delegates arranged day trips and tours which provided an interesting insight into the history and geography of Iceland.

Whilst we did not see the Northern Lights, a lot of time was spent looking for them and devising strategies for accessing the best vantage points. Perhaps that will be a reason to return …

Our sincere thanks, as always, go to our exceptional speakers and to all of our delegates who made our Iceland Conference both enjoyable and successful.

Papers from our Iceland Conference are available on this website in Conference Papers.
